Functional movement

Proper functional movement is essential to everyday life.

Time and time again we see injuries in the clinic from clients executing simple daily activities incorrectly. These could be things such as lifting a heavy item, placing a large item in the car, getting off the floor or even pushing a pram.

Functional movements utilise the whole body in natural movement patterns. Over time we become lazy and these natural movement patterns become less functional. We need to practice using proper functional movements in order to protect our bodies and safeguard from injury.

Here we’ve demonstrated how to properly preform some everyday movements in a functional way, showing you both the exercise you can perform and the everyday movement it can relate to.

  • Lunge + rotation

  • Bent over row (with or without weights)

  • Squat

  • V sit

  • Trunk flexion
